And with the different types of fare classes and passes, it can be confusing to determine what you should pay — and how. To help avoid that confusion before you visit Boston, use this this breakdown of what you'll pay to ride the T — as well as recommendations for which type of pass gets you the best deal.
Note: MBTA prices will be raised starting July 1, , so be sure to check pricing if you plan on using the bus and trains after that date. The below includes price details from before the price increase. CharlieCards are stored value. A CharlieTicket is a paper ticket, ideal for a single ride. All prices are for adult one-way trips; to see fares for students and seniors, visit the MBTA website. Charlie Day Link and Weekly Link Pass are the best value for tourists, they are per person and not per ride. They may be purchased at any T vending machine including the airport T stop or certain retail stores.
They include unlimited subway rides, local bus rides, and inner-harbor ferry not to be confused with the water-taxis and for the commuter rail but ONLY to zone 1 A. You may share a card if you have a Charlie Card or Charlie ticket. The ticket and card are used per ride, so if you have a Charlie Ticket or Charlie Card then you may share it since each ride will be deducted from the card or ticket.
A Charlie link Pass is not to be shared because it is per user, not per ride. Another distinguishing factor, a Charlie Card it plastic and can have money added to it. Even if you have a plastic card, the pass is dispensed as a paper ticket by the fare machine.
